I can't and I won't

“ I can’t take this course” because I am “too old”, “don’t know computers”, or “too stressed”.

“ I won’t be able to pass the exams or complete the assignments “ because I am “ too anxious”, “too afraid” or “ a bad test taker”.

Are these your thoughts when you have to take a course? If yes – then you have lots of company! Many people have these same feelings. It doesn’t seem to matter if it is a CPR course, a CRMA course, or a college course.

WHAT TO DO???????

First – find your why !

Why are you being asked to take this course or why do you feel that this training is important to your career, your clients and even your family. The why is the only thing that matters,

If the why is important enough to you – then everything else will follow!

For example – if one of your family members was really sick and needed to go the doctors – what would you do? Obviously, take them to the doctor or the emergency room but why?? If they didn’t go, your loved one might get sicker and sicker, so the why is clear. What if a bunch of obstacles to taking your loved one to the doctor was present – such as no car, you were scheduled to work, or there was a snowstorm. Would you let any of those obstacles prevent you from getting help for your loved one or would you find a way around those obstacles?

Second define those obstacles or barriers and come up with some ways around them!

One common barrier is technology. If you are not good with technology – find someone to help you. Reach out to your supervisor and ask to come into the office and be shown how to use the computer and the internet. Better yet – find a young person and ask them!

Another common barrier is time. These are crazy times, with working extra shifts and supporting our families. Carving out time to study and complete exams is challenging. Work with your family and your supervisor to schedule the time necessary to review the material and complete your assignments. Your team really does want you to succeed!

Third - visualize the end results!

Say no to thoughts of failure and say yes to thoughts of success. Take a few minutes and imagine yourself successfully passing an exam! Visualize how you will feel at the end of the course and how happy you will be on receiving a certificate.

You can do this!

Find your why, identify the barriers and the strategies needed to overcome them and visualize success.
