Hypothyroid medications: Side Effects

What is hypothyroid:



Our thyroid is gland in our neck that produces a  some specific hormones called T3 and T4.

Hypothyroidism is when not enough of these hormones are produced.  Hypothyroidism can be caused by surgical removal of the thyroid,  iodine deficiency, certain medications, autoimmune disease, and thyroiditis.


What is the treatment:

The only treatment is to replace T3 and T4 with hormone replacement.

The most common medication administered is Levothyroxine. The dose of Levothyroxine is very small and measured in micrograms.  The dose ranges from 100 to 200 MCG a day. 


Precaution: 

 This medication needs to be given 30 to 60 minutes  before breakfast.  This is because food and drink can interfere with the absorption of the medication!


Some Potential Side Effects include:

  • If the medication works to well!!  They will experience the symptoms of hyperthyroidism including heart palpitations, weight loss, nervousness, increased blood pressure.

  • Excessive sweating

    • Anxiety

    • Tiredness

  • diarrhea
